This easy classic Chili Seasoning mix recipe is super simple to make at home and works for any chili recipe. We love the flavor it adds to our classic Turkey Chili.
You probably have all of these dried ingredients in your pantry already, so why not make this mix yourself for a fraction of the cost!
This is my favorite recipe for chili seasoning because it is so flexible. Want more or less heat? Adjust the cayenne pepper. Like your chili a little smokier? Add more smoked paprika.

Ingredients Needed:
This recipe makes about ¼ cup of seasoning, which is similar to two store-bought packets of chili seasoning. It's enough to season a recipe with 2 pounds of meat.
For exact quantities, refer to the recipe card at the bottom.

- Chili Powder - The star of the show, so make sure it's fresh
- Onion Powder - the second key ingredient
- Kosher Salt - or flaky sea salt. Kosher salt is larger and coarser, which helps prevent over-salting. If you only have table salt, use â…“ teaspoon instead of 1 teaspoon
- Ground Cumin - or use crushed cumin seeds
- Garlic Powder - add a little extra if you're a garlic lover
- Dried Oregano - adds an herbal note
- Black Pepper - freshly ground
- Smoked Paprika - you can use regular paprika, but it will change the flavor a bit
- Cayenne Pepper - if you're a fan of heat, add more (or less if you like it mild)
- A small airtight container - we prefer a small jar that we can store with our spices
How to make homemade chili seasoning
This is more of a formula than a recipe and takes just 5 minutes to assemble.
- Measure and combine all the ingredients in a small bowl.
- Whisk everything until well combined.
- Use in your favorite chili recipe, such as our classic Turkey Chili recipe.
- If not using right away, store in an air-tight container for up to 6 months. A spice jar works perfectly.
- This recipe can be doubled.

Tips:
- Make sure your spices are fresh and still potent
- Always keep spices in a dry, dark cupboard or drawer
- If not using immediately, put all of the ingredients in an airtight jar and shake to combine rather than mixing in a bowl (less dishes - yay!)
