Few condiments can instantly elevate a meal the way a bold, biting Horseradish Sauce can. Often considered a partner to Standing Prime Rib Roast and Roast Beef, this creamy, tangy sauce cuts through the richness of the meat, offering a refreshing and fiery contrast in every bite.
Forget the store-bought version because this simple, homemade recipe takes just minutes to prepare and delivers a perfect depth of flavor.
Horseradish Sauce Ingredients
- Sour Cream or Crรจme Fraรฎche - Both full-fat or reduced-fat will work; we love to use Crรจme Fraรฎche
- Prepared Horseradish - if you like your super extra spicy, add more!
- Dijon Mustard - A Dijon-style mustard is softer than regular yellow mustard
- Mayonnaise - use full-fat or reduced-fat
- Fresh Chives - blended in the sauce and also used as a garnish
- Salt and Pepper
(See the recipe card at the bottom for exact quantities of each ingredient)

Sour Cream vs Crรจme Fraรฎche:
Both ingredients are similar cultured dairy products and will make an excellent Horseradish sauce. We like to use Crรจme Fraรฎche for a special occasion sauce because it gives the sauce a superior silky richness and milder tangy flavor.

What is prepared Horseradish?
You can find prepared Horseradish in the condiment section of your grocery store, typically sold in jars. It is a pungent condiment made up of grated horseradish root, vinegar, and salt.
It is good to note that prepared horseradish is an essential ingredient for a variety of dishes, such as Seafood Cocktail Sauce and a Homemade Bloody Mary Mix.
